What are some UU thoughts about American Sniper, the film?

Dylan O'Connor's review and essay on the film American Sniper on The Brockporter is well worth the read. You can access it by clicking here.

American Sniper clashes with most of UUs principles. It certainly does not affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person, etc.

Does this film inject a poisonous meme into our American society? Will it lead to our children and young adults wanting to emulate this way of being in the world? How can Unitarian Universalists reach out to a frightened and sadistic population in America and help them find better ways of dealing with the temptations of American exceptionalism?

  1. I haven't see the movie but curious why you say: obvious? Is the act of killing a foe yet fellow warrior also an act that does not affirm and promote the inherent worth and dignity of every person?

  2. if we truly believe in the inherent worth and dignity of every person, there is no way that any good Unitarian Universalist or Christian could find any redeeming value in this movie other than to be reminded all of are very dysfunctional American beliefs and values. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Other than this blog I have found no other comments about this film on any uu media outlets. It would seem that if Unitarian Universalist were too proclaim their faith to the world this would be a good opportunity for Unitarian Universalist to let their fellow citizens know what their values and principles are.

Many thanks to you for publishing this article.

I hope that this blog continues to have success in reaching a wider and wider audience.
