Question of the day

When we reflect on the civil rights movement in the United States in the 50s, 60s, and 70s what do you think is the link between religion and democratic transformation?

Editor's note:

This quote is often attributed to Martin Luther King Jr. and he did say it but it was originally said by Unitarian minister, Rev. Theodore Parker.

  1. Religion has been used to subjugate, oppress, and terrorize. It has also been used to liberate, uplift, and nurture. It is not religion itself but the institutional use to which its doctrine and adherents are put.

  2. As has been mentioned previously here, UUs have a vision of Standing On The Side Of Live, and with such a vision they work to rectify social injustice. This vision of standing on the side of love which comes from UUs religious vision is the salt for our more perfect union which is the beloved community.
