Public Theology - The end of nation states

The end of nation states

Indeed, government’s role in the world has already changed. The nation-state is not as important as it used to be. No longer are the nation-states islands unto themselves; today we truly live in a global age where ideas, people, capital, and technology flow freely across borders. Entrepreneurs view problems in the aggregate and will source labor from the best available minds, regardless of where people are physically. Nation-states, however, tend to limit themselves to the talent within their own borders.

Jain, Naveen. Moonshots : Creating a World of Abundance (p. 200). John August Media, LLC.

John Lennon’s dream in his song Imagine is coming true. The importance of nation states is on the decline as transnational corporations and entrepreneurs puruse their transnational goals of serving humanity to make money.

Teihard de Chardin saw this in his evolutionary vision of humankind moving from Alpha to Omega with the development of the “noosphere.” There is a diminishment of tribal and national identities as humanity increasingly recognizes and acknowledges and works to enhance its common bond and soul.

Is exemplary public service a good example of the application of Unitarian Universalist sixth principle?

Michael Lewis, in his book, The Fifth Risk, describes how Max Stier collaborated with Samuel Heyman to create the Partnership For Public Service which would give awards every year to people in public service who exhibited exemplary service. These awards became known as "The Sammies."

The first time I had heard of this program was in Lewis' book. I wonder why "The Sammies" don't get the news coverage that the Oscars and the Golden Globes get? It's like the Noble prize for public service in the United States.

Had you heard of them before?

What do you think of this idea of giving awards for public service that recognizes and publicly acknowledges outstanding achievements and results in public service activities?

Would the giving of these awards change the public cynicism pioneered by Reagan and Republicans that "government is not the solution but the problem" in a positive direction that public service is commendable and honorable work?

Today's lesson - There is nothing to fear

Today's lesson, number 48, in A Course In Miracles is "There is nothing to fear."

We are told in the introduction to A Course In Miracles, "The opposite of love is fear, but what is all-encompassing can have no opposite."

It is pointed out in today's lesson that those who trust in illusions experience fear because illusions are not true. It is further pointed out that those who trust in illusions are trusting in their own strength rather than in the strength of God.

Our decision making mind can choose between the path of the ego and the path of the spirit. When we choose the path of the ego, fear arises because the ego tells us it is "one or the other" and "give to get" which always involves attack and loss.

Unitarian Universalists covenant together to affirm and promote the goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all. This principle affirms and promotes "liberty" which is freedom from fear and with this loss of fear comes a willingness to be just and with justice comes great peace.

What is the next best right thing?

"Do the next best right thing." Simple.
Nip the problem in the bud.

A stitch in time saves nine.
An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Easy does it.
One day at a time.

Keep it simple.
Begin at the beginning and end at the end.

The wise person does not attach.
The wise person patiently watches as things unfold on their own.

The wise person does not push the river but goes with the flow.
The wise person knows and accepts that what is, is.

Engendering heaven on earth

Unitarian Universalists covenant together to affirm and promote the goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all. The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all is not to be reached, though, on the path of the ego. The change we are seeking is a spiritual one. Materialists will be continually disappointed until they realize that the heaven they seek and aspire to create is not of the ego world.

We have a choice. We can walk the path of the ego or the path of the spirit.

The path of the ego is a path in hell, and the path of the spirit is a path in heaven.

The path of the ego is the path which society conditions us to walk, and we walk it unconsciously until we hit bottom. Our tolerance for pain is very high. When the pain becomes great enough it dawns on us that there must be a better way, and then we turn from the path of the ego and begin to search. That search takes us on the walk with Love on the path of the spirit.

You might think that the walk with Love on the path of the spirit would be easy, and it is, if we are not continually seduced back onto the path of the ego. This seduction is insidious. Temptation abounds. We forget our decision to walk with Love on the path of the spirit until we become aware, once again, that we have a choice.

We must choose again, and again, and again, and gradually, walking with Love on the path of the spirit, becomes our new habitual way of life. Mindfulness is our tool and when tempted we are now aware of the temptation and ask ourselves, "Is this what I really want?" We know, deeper down, that walking the path of the ego is not what we want and we re-focus on walking with Love and the path of the spirit. We find that walking with Love on the path of the spirit fills us with peace and joy and we realize that we have engendered heaven on earth.
